I've been going through boxes, putting Christmas away, and I discovered a poem I wrote after Sam was born.
I've never written a poem before, don't know how, and don't really want to learn. I take my definition of poetry this time from Wordsworth: "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings." I did not revise this poem, I just wrote it, and few read this blog anyway, so that's why I post it.
Asleep
across my lap
you sprawl
one small fist raised
as if
to acknowledge
the wonder of your own
existence.
inside your ear
i find
tiny red veins
--or are they
arteries?--
and i marvel at
what power in me
made you.
i stroke your cheek
you flinch squint smile
back at me.
together
we find strength
in our
creation.
